In the United States there are over 302 million cell phones in use and that number is growing everyday. Just look around, everyone seems to have one. Cell phone sales are exploding and with the advent of the new Smart phones from Apple, Blackberry and HTC. The average cell phone user now changes their phone every 13 months. More than 130 million cell phones are expected to be replaced in the U.S. this year alone. As a result, there are over 250 million used cell phones just sitting around in U.S. homes right now. But unfortunately each year less than 5% are being collected for reuse and recycling. Cell phones contain toxic substances such as Arsenic, Cadmium, Cobalt, Copper, Lead and Zinc. Some of these hazardous substances are a serious threat to the environment and public health. The need for recycling has never been greater!
